A Day of Tribute to All Our Armed Forces

How Memorial Day Began  Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day. It is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation’s service. There are many stories that dates back to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day. There is also evidence that organized women’s groups in the South were decorating graves before the end of the Civil War: a hymn published in 1867, “Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping” by Nella L. Sweet carried the dedication “To The Ladies of the South who are Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead” (Source: Duke University’s Historic American Sheet Music, 1850-1920).

Where and Why Memorial Day?     While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it’s difficult to prove conclusively the origin of the day. It is more likely that it had many separate beginnings; each of those towns and every planned or spontaneous gathering of people to honor the war dead in the 1860′s tapped into the general human need to honor our dead, each contributed honorably to the growing movement that culminated in General  Logan giving his official proclamation in 1868. It is not important who was the very first, what is important is that Memorial Day was established. Memorial Day is not about division. It is about reconciliation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all.

Raine Inc. salutes all our Armed Forces on this special day.

Armed Forces Day

Chuck Felix

This Saturday, May 19th is Armed Forces Day.  Raine Inc. salutes all our military protecting our freedom each and every day.

President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country.

On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days.

The single day celebration came from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense.

May is “Older Americans Month”

Did you know that over one in every eight, or 13.1%, of the population is an older American? The older population (65+) reached 40.4 million in 2010, an increase of 5.4 million or 15.3% since 2000.

In 1963, Older Americans Month was established.  Roughly a third of older Americans lived in poverty and there were few programs to meet their needs. Interest in older Americans and their concerns were growing, however. In April of 1963, President John F. Kennedy’s meeting with the National Council of Senior Citizens served as a prelude to designating May as “Senior Citizens Month.”

Thanks to President Jimmy Carter’s 1980 designation, what was once called Senior Citizens Month, is now called “Older Americans Month,” and has become a tradition.

Historically, Older Americans Month has been a time to acknowledge the contributions of past and current older persons to our country, in particular those who defended our country. Every President since JFK has issued a formal proclamation during or before the month of May asking that the entire nation pay tribute in some way to older persons in their communities. Older Americans Month is celebrated across the country through ceremonies, events, fairs and other activities.

Raine Inc. would like to highlight the Security Travel Pouch in honor of Older Americans Month. #067P – Security Travel Pouch.  http://raineinc.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1523

This pouch offers a great idea for seniors that do a lot of traveling.  It is a secure option for keeping the passport, photo I.D. , boarding pass, travelers checks and etc.  that can all be held in one convenient pouch and is worn around the neck.

Who Uses Maps Anymore?

Times have changed over the years. Believe it or not, soldiers actually used paper maps in the field. Raine Inc. produced (and still does) the finest map cases in the world. They varied in different sizes and shapes to fit the mission. The Individual map case is the smallest 7”x9”. The Squad map case has a larger 15”x14” viewing area and can be folded neatly in a zippered binder that fits the BDU Cargo pocket. The Rolled map case has a much larger 16”x44” viewing area. The Jumbo case speaks for itself. Of course Raine produces the Map Bag that dates back to the 18th century.

Maps are being replaced by GPS devices. Raine has been on the forefront of creating innovative GPS cases for the field. Information cases (i.e. IPad, Iphone, smart phones, I-whatever) are the wave of the modern Army and Raine is on it. Please click here http://raineinc.com/catalog/index.php to find out more info. in our Product Catalog about  Map Cases, GPS cases and Smart Phone Cases.

Keep in mind, when batteries run out, paper always works.  And, we would love to hear about your map stories.
