FAQ: What About the Travel?

“When I meet a new acquaintance and tell them what I do professionally, without fail, they usually ask about the travel involved with my position at Raine Inc.  It is not a difficult question to answer; it is a double-edged sword in many respects.  When I tell someone that I travel to Las Vegas to do trade shows, they invariable tell me how lucky I am to be able to do that.  At first they were correct, it was cool to land at McCarran Airport the first time and be greeted by the hustle and bustle of a fully functioning casino in airport.  It was also fun to stay at the resort hotel, the Las Vegas Hilton. The casino was gorgeous, the room was large and lavish, and the excitement was non-stop.  It was thrilling to put a twenty in the slot machine and, while watching the progressive jackpot amount growing, pulling the lever hoping that three matching numbers would line up giving me that three million dollar pot.  Well, that never happened.  I put in another twenty, then another, then another, until there were no more to feed the beast.  Of the millions of visitors to Vegas, only a small number went big; the vast majority return home with only enough cash to pay the airport parking and tell themselves they had fun anyway.  On the other hand, the good thing about doing a show there (or anywhere for that matter) is the chance to see old customers and friends and to make new ones as well.   The civilian side of our business is like a big family.  We have been getting together to do business and enjoy one another’s company two or three times a year since I started at Raine eighteen years ago.  That is what makes the travel worthwhile for me.

In my travels for the company, I have learned a few things:

  1. Don’t drive in New York City; it’s a form of combat, but the people are nicer than they get credit for being.
  2. If you are in Florida during the “warm” months (April to November) you need to be inside at 3PM because it’s going to rain hard for five to ten minutes and then get really steamy.
  3. When you are in Louisiana, especially New Orleans, look for a small hole-in-the-wall restaurant for the best Cajun food.
  4. If you are in Texas, you should eat barbecue; the Louisiana rule applies here too.
  5. If you drive in Michigan or Ohio, you will have to do all your passing on the inter-state highways in the right lane. The natives there all drive in the left lane 2 mph under the speed limit.   I’m sure there must be some exceptions to that rule; just not in my experience.
  6. Lastly, if you are in Vegas, don’t have the mortgage money or your ATM card with you.

I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I am capable of learning so trust me on that.

FAQ: Holster Fit for Handguns

Raine Inc. gets questions about holster fit for handguns.  Raine offers several styles and some are designed to hold only one model while others will hold two or three similar styles.  We also have holsters designed to hold most small, medium and large frame semi-auto pistols.

The important questions are the ones we ask.  We need to know: 1) what the customer needs to carry in a holster or pouch and 2) how they want to wear or carry it.  This info allows us to accurately fill their need and occasionally lets us direct them to other items that may be useful.
